Pity Pie
Sammy was prepared. Sheâd hardly had any sleep the night before, although she hadnât been spending the night making lists. She already knew what she had to do, or at least how she would get started. It was now her jobâas far as she was concernedâto find the connection between Jimmy Holland and Blake Hendricks.
It wouldnât make sense to go talk to Blake just yet. He was supposed to call her when heâd fixed her vehicle, and it only made sense to be patient and wait for that. She couldnât exactly talk to Jimmy, either, since he was dead. But he did have mourning coworkers, and that seemed as good a reason as any to go and visit the dealership.
The problem was finding the time. Sammy, just like the rest of the workers, had a scheduled lunch hour. But that was really only good on paper, because they didnât always get to leave right on time depending on the demand of the customers. Usually, they didnât even get to sit down.
And today was certainly one of those days. The Radical Grandmas were back in, but this time they werenât coordinating for a charity fundraiser. Theyâd brought their grandchildren and godchildren in with them, and the group took up an entire corner of the restaurant.
âArenât they just darling?â beamed Viola Hampshire as she pressed her hands together and watched two small girls fighting with each other in a booth. âI promised all the children we would take them over to the library for story hour after this. I wanted to get some good food in their tummies beforehand, though, so they wouldnât be whining.â
Sammy noticed with a grimace that the children seemed to be getting far more food on the floor than in their tummies, but it wasnât her place to say so. âIâm sure theyâll enjoy that.â
Agnes Miller tugged on her sleeve and pointed out her numerous grandchildren, rattling off their names. Sammy hoped she wasnât expected to remember them all, because there were an awful lot of them ranging from a tiny tot who could barely walk to a bored teenager. âWe ladies spend so much time together, we thought it would be a good idea to get the kids together, too. We figured theyâre sure to be just as good of friends as we are. That reminds me, Viola, I was thinking we could bring them all to the movies when weâre done at the library.â
âWhatâs playing?â
The other woman shrugged as though it really didnât matter. âI have no idea. But you know kids, they like anything on a screen, especially if you put popcorn in front of them.â
Sammy refilled drinks and made a mental note to give those tables and chairs a thorough wipe down once the group was gone. She loved the Radical Grandmas and the work they did for the community, but three old ladies who dabbed the corners of their mouths with their napkins were much easier to clean up after than a whole gaggle of children.
